Welcome to Rik's Blog. Rik is a US citizen who was going nowhere and decided to join the Army and come to Europe to finally start experiencing life way back in 1998. He went from Germany to Italy, back to Germany, then back to Italy, then took a slight detour in South Carolina before going back to Italy, then to South Korea and now, finally, back in Germany. What a long, strange trip it's been...

Absolutely FABULOUS! What a difference from the the drag parade of Mardi Gras in The Big Easy. Is it true that in Europe the celebration is more closely tied to the church?
Not really Kitty. I think all winter carnivals have their origins in the Catholic church but while European ones are more tame than Mardi Gras, they're still not that religious in nature.
People say the best Carnaval in Europe is the one in Venice, where it all began.
There are so much theories about this Carnaval thing. Even before the Catholic Church made it known, its been there already practiced by many for centuries. I've also posted the same topic... but I guess nowadays, Carnaval is simply about frolicking and nothing spiritual anymore.
Anyway, Carnaval is also big here in Holland but only in the south... sadly we are not from there.
Love gluhwein and the beautiful pics. So posh and elegant!
